CER Seminars Presents: Evaluating Your Clinical Practice for Cultural Competence

Clinicians need to develop the capacity to sit comfortably with those different than themselves. Discomfort is common, particularly as our world changes. Clinical training programs often use the term, Cultural Competency to define this capacity to sit in difference and teach multicultural courses to review characteristics of various populations and/or intersectionality. Although useful orientations, clinicians may benefit from cultural humility models that are self-reflective and skills based. This workshop reviews one such model developed within a faith-based university that incorporates postmodern, outcome research and a Christian faith worldview.

SPEAKER BIO: Dr. Claudia Grauf-Grounds, PhD., is a licensed marriage and family therapist in California and Washington State as well as an AAMFT Approved Supervisor having over 40 years of clinical, teaching, supervisory, publishing and administrative experience. She chaired the masterā€™s program in marriage and family therapy from 2000-2017 and has taught/supervised at the University of San Diego, Bethel Seminary, Rosemead Graduate School of Psychology/Biola, and Point Loma Nazarene University. She is co-editor of the widely adopted textbook, Essential Skills in Family Therapy (3rd ed.) as well as the 2020 publication of A Practice Beyond Cultural Humility: How clinicians can work more effectively in a diverse world. She is under contract for a second edition for this text. Her chapter with Heather Laird in the 2024 AAMFT Systemic Ethics e-book, titled Ethics of Incorporating Religion and Spirituality into Therapy, is also relevant to this training.
